Battle Line

Designer: Reiner Knizia

Theme:  Ancient battles were fought in organized formations.  The leaders of both sides directed their forces along the battle line to gain tactical advantage in order to overwhelm their opponent in the center, breakthrough one of his flanks or hold their positions until the time came for a decisive move.  In Battle Line,  players send troops to fight along one of these lines to see who can field the most powerful military formations to win the battle.

How It Plays

  • Game Mechanics:  This is a hand management game.  Players begin with a hand of 7 cards and take turns drawing and playing cards in front of the lined up flag pawns.  The goal is to create three card poker hands that beat the opponent's cards on the opposite side of the flag.  Tactic cards can also be played that give special rule breaking powers.
  • Turn Summary:
    1. Take one of the following actions:
      • Play a troop card in front of one of the flags with no more than three cards assigned to each flag.
      • Play a tactics card in front of one of the flags as long as opponent has the same number or more tactics cards in play.
    2. If there are three cards on both sides of the flag or it can be shown there is no way for one side to beat the other, resolve the winner of that poker hand.  Winner takes the flag.
    3. Draw a troop or tactics card to replenish hand up to 7 cards.
  • End Game:  When one player has won three adjacent flags or any five flags, the game ends immediately.
  • Victory:  The player that ended the game wins.
